You don't have to be a puritan. If memory serves, almost all of americas founding fathers were big drinkers, with some even having personal distilleries/breweries.
Chemicals can be honed to help humans accomplish great things. A stimulant when the body/mind needs to perform, a depressant to calm the nerves or a sedative to ease pain.
All of those can also be taken over the line. Like with all benign things, it's humans that are the weak point. We are the fulcrum. Wisdom and knowledge should tell you not to consume any of those things without good reason.
Hone your will so that you can interpret those reasons correctly without becoming a degenerate addict.
