What do you guys think of it? I find it to be an extremely interesting perspective on the Faith, and his portrayals of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven are very vivid and imaginative. I also find it funny that in the story, everyone that Dante historically didn't like was in Hell, and everyone he did like was either in Purgatory or Heaven.
I don't really care for it. I think the description of hell was completely wrong. And it's hard to believe Julius Caesar would be a "righteous pagan". It's a comic book for the 1500s.
Not a Christian but there's a deeper level to it. I'm going to butcher this a bit, been a while: It shows the hierarchy of being. For example he starts out with love of a physical female then moves on to love of poetry? Then love of God? Shows how one moves from earth to heaven. From the physical to symbolic to highest level on nonphysical. Look up Symbolic World - Divine Comedy on YouTube. He explains it much better
Scientists believe in emergence but there's also emanation. It's a two way street
He was wrong about some of the people in there (one of the popes he insinuated in Hell was later canonized), but I'm pretty sure his overall description is accurate. Its very hard to read without footnotes, luckily you can find digital versions of the whole Comedy with annotations online.
