he was discharged in 1960 yes. he mentioned that he only found out and read mein kampf after the war.

Obviously way before 1960 because his political career was mainly in the 50s and 60s. 1955 was when he started to enter the realm of politics.

He fought tooth and nail to stay in the navy.
