Since it apparently needs to be said, the issue is not eating birds. It's hunting and slaughtering them in public spaces. It's the complete obliviousness to the fact that we live (or used to live) in an organized society rather than a hunter-gatherer wilderness.
If public parks become open air slaughterhouses, or even if your neighbor's backyard becomes the rotten refuse pile of a butcher shop, then that matters.
