The constant watering keeps humidity higher and that makes it harder to cool off at night. Have you ever been within a quarter mile of the Colorado River at night? Freaking way hotter passing over on I-40

True, but that's not the main cause. A large river used to run through downtown Phoenix and temps still always dropped below 90 back then. It's the concrete and asphalt, plain and simple.

I've spent many years in the Mojave desert and those large rocks do hold quite a bit of heat all night long.
