The fact that social media quietly rebranded PM (private message) as DM (direct message) is all you need to know. They literally took away the privacy.

At this point you can't really rely on electronic communications to be secure, assume all of it is compromised. Here's my ranking of options: self hosted matrix and threema are probably the best. Signal is questionable. Telegram at this point is fucked. Just assume any other chat program has a street shitter and a fed reading it.
