Yamnaya people were different than the northern Europeans. I believe based on my reading that yamnaya were essentially steppe people that proliferated into Europe and ran into the existing Mediterranean people as well as an existing North Western European people.

They are the IndoEuropeans, the literal progenitors of all European people.

The northern Europeans are their descendants, as are all European people.
