Well, it's actually because they're poor, and various tariffs and import restrictions make it hard to get other vehicles. Russians are *ridiculously* poor.

You ever see those videos of cars exploding for no reason? Pretty much only happens in Russia, because they refit cars to use even cheaper LNG to save money, with the consequence that a gas leak blows up the fuck up.

People don't drive motorcycles in Vietnam because they're really in to fuel efficiency, it's because cars have like a 200% import tax.

Well, it's both. Russians drive old cars because they're poor and because old cars are reliable (by reliable I mean can be easily worked on). If Russia destroyed their old cars a lot of Russians would be walking or driving scooters by now--a future I see for many Americans at this point.
