So by design if you're going the "wrong" direction you have to wait ages. With no traffic lights everyone slows down a bit but nobody is left waiting ages. So some people are slowed down slightly yes, some people get through significantly quicker but the "right" direction are only slowed down slightly, they still get through pretty quick. The "wrong" direction has cars going through less frequently so the disruption to the "right" side is actually minimal if any at all, but the benefit to the "wrong" side is great.
