No, you're a little wrong on this. It's definitely worse now than 2016. In 2016, the right-wing republicans had the "alt-right" backing them which was problematic because many of these people actually had correct ideas on how to fix society. The elite spent the last 8 years systematically divesting themselves from the alt-right people altogether and today the Trump Republicans are no more than Obama Democrats.
