The most compelling explanation I’ve heard is that they live entirely in the present, with no thought about past or future - they likely aren’t fully conscious.
So it beeps, and it perhaps annoys them a little, but it’s over and done and in the present, the detector is silent so … there’s no problem to solve. It’s as though the person who was momentarily annoyed is a different person who no longer exists.
This also explains “I din do mucin” - the crime was committed in the past, and the person who did it might as well be a different person. The present person truly did nothing.
It also explains their general failure (here and in Africa) to improve their situation. They’d be improving it for some other person
