I believe the narrative started in the 60s and was pushed on boomers as they grew up (oldest boomers would have been 20 when it started). My mom is on the younger end of boomers and she definitely got the atrocity propaganda in college. They started give me the worst of it in sixth grade, which in hindsight was so blatantly over the top and emotionalized I should have seen right threw it, but I was a dumb autistic kid at the time.
