After the normans "conquered" England, they found that their nobility were mysteriously dying. Since they could not find the murderers, they would fine the local village for every unsolved murder of a norman.
After the edict was issued, they started dressing the normans in anglo-saxon clothing.
In the end, a lot of normans ended up dead whenever they left their castles.
Eventually, the normans had to grant nobility to the Earls, Anglo-Saxon chiefs. They also had to recognize the rights of the common man. Just so that they could go outside again.
Anglo-Saxons remember the old ways. If you can't beat your enemy in a pitched battle, you find other ways to fight.
