I also love the irony in interstellar when the brother is growing corn. Like they didn't learn a thing when they farmed the earth into oblivion the first time, instead let's farm more fucking corn lol.
Well, I think it's vaguely implied in the Director's Commentary or whatever that the original reason for the Collapse and later the blight that keeps destroying crops was actually the result of a bioweapon that got loose from a lab or was released in a time of war, then escaped its confines and fucked everything up.
Obviously, that was a little too on-the-nose for the goyim to be shown, so Nolan just cut it out and left the backstory vague.
