The original operating system Gates bought was called QDOS, which was "quick and dirty operating system". He intelligent hired people to expand on it and add features and switches to make it more marketable as MS DOS. He ruined several good, much better, operating systems, such as DR DOS. He also tried to corner the browser market by striking deals with computer companies who would pre-install Windows 3.1 and ensure that their Internet Explorer icon was prominent on the screen. It didn't work, and Netscape still ate their lunch.

That isn't what happened.

When IBM began developiing the IBM PC 5150, they tried to secure a license to CP/M, but Digital Research didn't like the proposed terms of the deal. So IBM turned to Microsoft, which licensed a product called 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products (SCP). Some months later, Microsoft purchased 86-DOS outright for $50,000.

86-DOS became IBM PC-DOS when it shipped with the IBM PC in August of 1981.

When I bought my 386 PC in 1991 it had IBM Dos 3.3

MS retained the right to sell it themselves too. When Compaq clean room reverse engineered the IBM Bios and created the PC clone in 1988 they also shipped it with MS-DOS. It was this clone market that really entrenched Microsoft.

DR-Dos was never that big a threat - despite MS' dirty tactics.

It was Windows 3.1 that really did it.

More like the government/nwo that created it and chose him as their public figurehead killed all competition and development to lock people in the same OS and control system they govern.
