When I was young I was taught to fear nukes and the USSR and the communist threat and terrorists and how we needed to have the biggest and baddest military with all the latest gizmos and gadgets and we need more and more nukes and such. Most of this simply wasn't true.

As I got older and studied a little military history, it became apparent that we were all barking up the wrong tree. The news was just there to try and rile us up against imaginary enemies and convince us to send our boys off to distant lands we don't care about. None of it ever made any sense. Saddam has WMDs? So what? USSR can nuke us? Who cares? Durka Durka Mohammed Jihad wants to blow up our cities -- don't import them, problem solved.

The US geography is particularly suited to defense. We sit on prime real estate when you think about its defense capabilities. Many countries today exist because of similar facts. They control a particular piece of ground that is easier to defend than other kinds of ground. Russia, for instance, has a very good defense against European invasion. England and the British Isles sit across a particular kind of sea that makes an invasion almost impossible. Look at the mountains of Europe and you'll see the borders of countries. You can even look up the mountain ranges on wikipedia and get a list of the various times people tried to invade over them and failed.

WWII really woke me up to the reality of geography as the primary fact of military might. The French reinforced the common invasion route, only for Hitler to make an end run through Belgium. They though that Belgium could stop an invasion, but they were wrong. All that effort and it just ended up being a speed bump. Trying to re-take Europe from Hitler lead to one impossible challenge after another. If the Third Reich wasn't on its last legs and fighting on another front, there's a good chance Western Europe would've been the end of the American and British empires.

Air superiority doesn't buy you as much as you think. It certainly gives you an advantage in certain kinds of warfare, but in other kinds of warfare, it is completely irrelevant. Now that we have space rockets and satellites, it makes me wonder what we really get with air superiority at all.

We are programmed to think certain things are impossible or inevitable, but history is full of examples of people working around them. Many heroes won against impossible odds, and many great men lost when it was impossible to lose. Technology doesn't always win. Underestimating your enemy means you are going to lose, even if they don't have anything significant.

Isolationism of the American continents from Europe and Asia is the natural defense. Shut off all traffic across the sea. South America has her own defenses should someone actually make a landing there. The Spaniards and Portuguese only succeeded because they came from cultures where warfighting was a national past time and their technology was several steps ahead of the natives. Were one of those things not true, I am sure the natives could've defended the continent against them. Of course it doesn't help when 90% of your population is wiped out due to a new plague.

And in North America, a similar story unfolds. The Rockies form an impenetrable fortress wall. Certain rivers are almost uncrossable at any point, and the few points where a crossing could be made are easily defended. Even the vast Great Plains are impossible to seize outright. Sure, set up a fort, we'll just go around it. Again, if the Indians hadn't died out before we showed up, we would never have taken any land at all. It would've been too expensive. We're only here because they all got sick.

We do not need foreign wars. We never did. If someone really wants to fight us over stuff we care about, they'd have to cross an ocean, brave a coastal landing, and then fight for every square inch of ground over generations. Even if we were practically incompetent the odds would always be in our favor. Put us in the stone age against a modern military, they'd still have problems finding a place to sleep at night.

We are strongest when we go into turtle mode. We thrive best when we build a wall between us and Asia and Europe. We never needed their crap, we certainly don't need them, and we don't need their stupid wars. Let Israel do its thing, let Iran do her thing, I don't care. We don't need to be part of it and we never did.

i always avoided him because i couldn't stand his voice/accent, and naturally assumed he was part of the whole Conservative Inc. gang anyway, but i just checked his short video about iran and he seems pretty spot on and isn't afraid to call a spade a spade, and mentions he has a secondary platform off youtube for his "spicier" content

I grew up not too far from a major military base. My dad explained to use kids that if there were a nuclear war, we had nothing to worry about, as the military base would be targeted and we would instantly evaporate in the initial blast. True to his word, he never did any prep for nuclear war.

Later in life, I watched as Chernobyl, the greatest nuclear disaster in history, unfolded. We were told that millions of people were going to die early due to cancer or whatever. Shows like The Simpsons didn't help, propagating the idea that nuclear power plants caused mutations and such. In the end -- only a handful of people suffered any ill effects, and those were the people directly exposed to radiation from the exposed core. No increased cases of cancer, no shorter lifespan.

After several decades of recovery, today Hiroshima and Nagasaki are beautiful cities. The fears we had about fallout and what not simply never materialized. Now we know that people in the immediate blast area get killed, some people on the edge get irradiated beyond hope of recovery, but everyone else has a chance at living a normal life thereafter.

Nuclear weapons themselves are a weapon from a time when war was general, when you tried to destroy entire armies and population centers in one go. Today, war doesn't fight like that. Perhaps it is the threat of nuclear war, or perhaps it is the fact that once you glass an area, you rule over sand. Perhaps it is the fact that at the end of the day, you have to send boots on the ground to control an area. Nuclear weapons do not replace military patrols.

On a side note -- nuclear weapons are not easy to make. In fact, I remember reading the reports from the North Korea "hydrogen bombs". The data suggested that they no only failed to initiate the fusion process, but they also failed to get the fission process working. In the end they built a dirty bomb. They'd get more bang for the buck if they just packed the hole with dynamite and lit the fuse.

I totally doubt that any countries outside of the US and Russia even have working nukes. Sure, India and Pakistan claim to have nukes, along with several other countries, but maintaining those nukes so that they will actually explode is extraordinarily difficult. Making nukes in the first place -- I am convinced if you gather all the scientific literature in the entire world on nuclear material you would fail. I cannot imagine nuclear scientists who actually understand how these things work publishing the right numbers or even the right theories. I wouldn't publish that kind of data in the open if I had access to it, even if you put a gun to my head.

If you wanted to build a nuke, you'd have to run through the entire Manhattan project on your own, having your scientists discover the actual mechanisms that govern how nuclear interactions work, detailing the numbers to a fine enough resolution that you could reach critical mass. And after all that, which I doubt any country could accomplish, possibly not even the United States given the "science" culture of today, you'd have the nukes we made in the 1940s. Barely worth it, since you can just pack more TNT in a bigger box and get a bigger boom.

Do I care whether or not Iran has nukes? Absolutely not. In fact, I wouldn't care if everyone had nukes. I'd be more worried about supersonic missiles and machine guns than nukes.

Please cite chapter and verse.

You have to connect these things to make the claim stand:

1. That the people living in Israel today are jews
2. That God chose the jews above everyone else

I read the Bible several times, and I do not find any evidence to support any of those claims in the Bible. In fact, I great of scripture represents the OPPOSITE: That the people living in Israel today are NOT jews, and even if they were, the jews are NOT chosen by God.

So please, prove me wrong.

It involved a lot of blood. The Anglo-Saxons rose up and built a throne out of the skulls of all their enemies.

First we deported all of the aliens. This included those who were never naturalized but claimed birthright citizenship by virtue of soil alone. No speak-a English-y? Adios! A lot of grannies suddenly got motivated to learn English. It was funny watching them struggle as they learned just enough English to know what "deported" meant.

Next, we banned communism and commie-think. See, we had already made lists of known communist sympathizers, so when it came time we just lined them up and started shooting. It took a few days but eventually we got the vast majority of them. They tried to flee into the mountains, but we were already there.

The remainder of the people fell into two camps: Those who were loyal to the Anglo-Saxons and those who opposed us. We gave them three days to pack their things. If no country wanted them, they were offered slavery in the mines or death.

We went after the jews next, but there were none left. Oh, I forgot, we repudiated the debt. It turns out, debt that is not lawful and constitutional is not owed. We seized assets from the congress critters and presidents who passed that debt to settle it.

Corporations were abandoned as they could no longer hide behind the law. Anglo-Saxons get really brutal about natural rights, especially property rights. They would rather rule over a hovel than rent a palace.

After this we built a beautiful wall around America. No one comes in. Shoot on sight. Roving gangs of enforcers, looking for enemies within. Great stuff.

I don't remember Canada or Mexico being a state anymore. I think they were satellite states or vassal states. Same for South America.
It was glorious. Maybe we conquered them outright. I don't remember.

I do remember that we had a "nuke first" policy to foreign affairs. If we thought you were a threat to us, we would warn you a few times, then we would glass your nation and laugh about it.

I can't tell you how giddy I was watching people getting blown up just for having blue hair. That was hilarious.
