Like Eve in the Garden, women have no defense against evil. Call them "simple" or call them "retarded", but they're clearly incapable of protecting themselves or their own young. A woman NEEDS a man to guide and protect her, even from herself. The knowledge that a woman killed her unborn child will haunt her for the rest of her life. Your comment about the murder of crows made me think of The Raven, which feels apt:
