It's weird to hear workmates brag about spending all their savings on exotic international holidays where they get treated like royalty by staff who speak English.
I couldn't think of anything worse than being super-fancy and pretentious.
I'd rather spend 1/10th of that money on hiking and mountain climbing and return with vivid memories and a greater understanding of the world.
Teaching English Second Language in Lhasa and drinking iodine treated water and yak butter tea with cracked ribs are some of my fondest memories.
“Traveling, and vacationing” especially abroad is so strange and foreign to me. Pun intended. I also find it strange “bragging” to strangers about my “achievements”. Then again, I would never go to a reunion of strangers.
