In Varanasi they bathe, wash their clothes and drink from the Ganges river, 100 feet away from the burning ghats where human remains are dumped in the water.

It's normal to look out across the river and see human remains floating.

It's also normal to walk the streets and see rotting human corpses of people who traveled to the Burning Ghats in the hope of being burned, but lacked the money to pay for it themselves.

It's also normal to see wild monkeys fighting over scraps of human remains and wild dogs walking around dragging their intestines behind them or with exposed brains because most Hindus believe in karma (your suffering is atonement for sin and will help you "climb the spiritual ladder" so your next reincarnation is happier) rather than compassion.
