I remember those years. If you think the country is divided politically now, you should have seen it then. There was more distinction between left and right, without jews pushing for the right to accept Israel as "our closest ally". Seriously, jews were still considered anathema back then.

The left/right divide had a large middle ground of "moderates", who I always considered people with too much empathy and agreed with points on both sides and thus refused to pick a side based on their convictions.

MAD magazine did a good job of parodying the other groups on both sides of the moderates. This is how the classified them:

- Liberals
- Leftists
- New left extremists

- Conservatives
- Reactionaries
- Right-wing militants

Liberals and conservatives were directly to the left and right side of the moderates, of course. This was considered humor in 1972, but it was pretty accurate. It's really sad how mainstreamed the extreme left behaviors have become.

Where are these people today? Why don’t have any sort of influence?
