Even in the heartland of the Roman empire, most northern Italians are still celtic/germanic, greeks are still Greek, Spaniards are still celtiberian/lusitanian, and the French are still gaulish. Although the mainland celts cannot really be considered a distinct race because they clearly incorporated a lot of different phenotypes into one cultural identity (Spaniards are overwhelmingly celtic but do not look at all like they're Irish, balkans are hellenized celts, the italians themselves, among other examples)
