Hitler was a practicing Catholic, although he did not recognize the authority of Rome in matters of the state. After Hitler took power in 1933, He and Rome came to an agreement with culminated in the Reichskonkordat, which included guarantees of liberty for the Church, independence for Catholic organizations and youth groups, and religious teaching in schools. In time, some Catholics and particularly Rome were unhappy with it, but that was because under the Reich, the authority of the state overruled any authority the church thought it should have.
