Josef had a troubled childhood. He was born in Vienna to an unmarried couple, and was sent away to a Catholic boarding school. There, he was beaten so badly by one of the nuns that it caused serious injury.

He recovered, but left the school, and later started a career as a sculptor. As an adult, he became one of the Reich's foremost sculptors, and helped define the style we think of today as "Fascist Art".
