The prelude started all the way back with Bush 2 seeking to put up missiles in Poland. Putin said "nay".
Next was Georgia's attack in South Ossetia 2008, probably a test run for Ukraine, but an extremely inconsequential one.

Of course, there were the usual suspects like Nuland and Vindman, and Ukraine had its very own fake and gay color revolution...

Depends on how you want to view it. I would argue it started at least a decade before that when the U.S. alphabet agencies successfully orchestrated the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and overthrew the pro-Russian Yanukovych regime.
