Star trek was never "based", it was just that there was actually some good writing with strong characters. But at it's core it was pozzed. Both Nemoy and Shatner were jews, and Roddenberry wanted to push the envelope on homo topics, but was simply restrained by what people would accept. Did you forget the dudes in dresses in the first season of The Next Generation?

Don't forget TOS had one of the first "interracial kisses" on tv. Granted, it was two subhumans (a kike kissing a sheboon), but I doubt people in the late 60s knew shatner was a kike.
