I wouldn't call it 'empathy'. It's deliberate self-destruction.
Something about the unnatural way we're forced to live our lives (as well as constant demoralisation) makes humans self-destructive. Advertisers selling self-destruction in the forms of alcohol and cigarettes have been exploiting that for a long time, selling them essentially as a slow death. You can amplify self-destructive behaviour by convincing someone that they deserve to be punished, which is what we've seen all across the west.
Pile women's' innately masochistic tendencies on top of that and you have a potent mix.
