From someone with a lot of kids and who has kids that often play largely unattended outside...having some help still matters, lol. What Germany did was to provide a mother with 4+ children a young female "helper" essentially. While young men went into labor service to learn trades, agricultural work, forestry, etc, young women were doing largely the same but in more domestic roles. Watching my own wife trying to rear several kids, including newborns and the disrupted sleep that goes along with it, it is a tough job if you also expect the house to be kept up in tip top shape. Having a mother's helper available not only provides an extra pair of hands, but also prepares the young girl for motherhood and household management herself.

I think the word for that used to be "Grandmother", or aunts, etc. Yes, raising kids is a pain in the ass. We used to have a more cohesive society, and multigenerational living, or at least people lived near their relatives. The new US thing has been to turn 18, either the parents kick out the kid or the kid rage quits and leaves voluntarily to run off and join the circus or whatever. They spend the next 15 years pissing away money on rent that could have been used for something more constructive.

This is not a problem that can be fixed by taking out a single part. The system is broken. Jobs, childcare, marriage, parenting, culture, values, houses/housing, streets, roads, tax structure, immigration policy. It was designed to create the shitty conditions we have now. We need to replace a lot of it.
