McCandless loved Jesus and sought a spiritual connection with Him through the beauty of nature in much the same way that Saint Francis of Assisi did.

If you actually read his book, you'd know McCandless repeatedly spoke about the beauty of God in nature and how thankful to God that he could enjoy it.
