I read that novel too.
The young man (Christopher Johnson McCandless) starved to death only because he was poisoned.
McCandless perfected some awesome survival skills in the novel, especially from a series of mistakes when attempting to dry meat to preserve it.
He survived very well, but the book he used to identify edible plants had an error which caused the young man to eat a poisonous plant, which fucked his up so badly he wasn't able to recover.
The young man did accept help from locals and walked into town to work to get supplies on several occasions.
He was very respectful to the people he met, but he did not like materialistic consooooomer culture.

Wrong again.
If you actually read his book, you'd know McCandless repeatedly spoke about the beauty of God in nature and how thankful to God that he could enjoy it.
I've wasted enough time on your ignorant nonsense. I'll be ignoring your shit from this point forward.

He's using it as a figure of speech as in he probably realized his error in going innawoods with no knowledge or skill before he passed, nothing to do with religion.

This was McCandless' final message:

I'm unsure why you'd randomly assume someone isn't Christian based on nothing.
I think he “realized his error” on his death bed…
