If I wrote every one of my thoughts about things on paper both leftists and fascists would find enough things to cherry-pick to suggest I support their side. In a 100 years someone could suggest my staunch racism was just a "product of the times" rather than because I've come to the conclusion racism is good and I'd come to this conclusion in every era.

People just try to latch onto authoritative and respected figures in history to give more legitimacy to their current day values and beliefs.
