The argument I've heard is that they sell the valuables so they can buy food. We know it's a lie but that's the argument.

That’s not an argument though, and that’s the trap you set for them because the end result is still food with the former option of just stealing food to begin with not giving nearly as bad optics. This would at least keep most people agnostic opinion wise on the subject. Even if I saw nigger sticking prime rib steaks in their bag/purse, or down their pants, I’m going to be pissed, but not nearly as pissed as if I see them stealing electronics, shoes, and other dumb shit.
