At the beginning of the civil war, he seemed sort of indecisive about which side to join. I've read that he was a loyalist to Virginia first, and only chose to lead the South because Virginia was in the South.
Does anyone have writings by or about Robert E Lee from credible sources that elaborate on his political views prior to the war or even in hindsight?
Also, what's the consequence for Robert E Lee for losing the war? Surely they didn't execute him. How did he live out his life after the war?
I can answer part of the second question - his estate was seized by the federal government and turned into Arlington National Cemetery. Pretty sure he was stripped of citizenship and banned from voting or holding political office as well, but not sure if he spent any time in prison like some of the other Confederates like Jefferson Davis did.
