Always better to get your nutrients from food, and the best source of nutrients for building muscle are red meat, eggs, lean chicken breasts, and fish.
Though I do take micronized creatine (particles are smaller & more water soluable so absorbed faster & more completely) and have found it to be worthwhile, especially now that I'm 40. I've retained strength & lean muscle mass better than anyone else I know in my age group.... though the best diet in the world is only going to do so much if you aren't using it as fuel for throwing iron around and rigorous outdoors activities.
