I think that the idea that the ancient Europeans were a bunch of savages is a Judeo-Christian construct. Christians try to take credit for European civilization when they brought nothing but the Dark Ages to the continent.

Violent tribes can not bond with other tribes and become easy prey for organized foreign armies. Native American tribes are a good example.

The Romans had a difficult time pushing north into Germany, and England. The Roman historian, Tacitus, admired Germans for their the tribes’ bravery, loyalty to kin, and perceived moral purity compared to Roman decadence.
