It's not only a lack of self-awareness, but ignorance of history plus narcissistic tendencies. Spain did not invade Mexico, as Mexico did not exist at that time. What's worse is that without Spain founding the Viceroyalty of New Spain, modern Mexico won't would not have been possible.
