That's very true. And emo/screamo. There was also a lot of overlap between a lot of these genres at that time, a lot of shitty bands but also a lot of really great stuff. If you filter out the shit it was really a golden age of rock music. Probably the last.

Outside of rock you also had eurodance music too. Obviously huge in Europe (and still played frequently and remixed by newer artists) but still big in American internet culture and club culture too, my dad was a freelance dj for a while and a majority of the club music at the time (late 90s to late 00s) was eurodance, techno, or some variant thereof.

Also, I didn't mention it before, but I've a huge soft spot for emo. I was adjacent to that subculture when I was in high school and listened to the music and half-assed dressed like that too. No hair dye, piercings, or make up but yes fringes, ripped jeans, flannels and converse. Also yes to dating mostly emo girls
