The evangelicals thought he was a wonderful boon in their quest to debunk mormonism, but it turned out he was an adulterer, a liar, and a fool. Eventually they disavowed him because his lies were causing good people to get hurt.
The truth of the matter: Latter-day Saint doctrine regarding race was never well-defined. We believe what is in the scriptures, and it looks like a certain group of people were cursed in a particular way. So were others. In fact, so are the members of the LDS church. Everyone who disobeys God in the slightest is cursed until they repent and live according to what God has given them. Big whoop.
