It's not a term, it's the very concept of race that did not exist before Darwin. Gobineau was the first who applied the concept of nation to race.

Yes ancient people saw that niggers were savages but they thought it was because they didn't hear about Jesus yet, or that they were backward for some other unknown reason. The Catholic Church took it as its mission to go to Africa and civilize niggers because they were convinced (and still are) that niggers are like us, they just lack education.
