Why did Julian the Apostate glorify them and try to build them a temple? To spite the Christians. That's some based Roman paganism, huh?

I agree that the church was too easy on them. They should have been expelled or exterminated. But I don't think there's any evidence a pagan Rome that never accepted Christianity would have solved the jew problem. The ashkenazi population was created by middle eastern jews mixing with italians, who were pre-Christian Romans.
