they've invested so heavily into the extremism, gone so far out there, destroyed so much, that even questioning it is mentally and emotionally devastating. the average person is not capable of introspection. but of those who are smart enough to do so, going back, admitting they're wrong, would mean owning up to the fact that a fundamental part of their identity was so devastatingly wrong that they've destroyed so much because of it.
