man, i resonate with this more than you'd think. back in 2018 i co-opted my parents' dream to move to the countryside (which initially fell apart due to external circumstances) and currently live alone in a shack on our land a few hundred meters away from a tiny village of mainly old drunkards. it's always interesting to see how people crave the peace and quiet i have daily but can't reconcile it with the brainwashing that they need city clubs, city jobs, and city noise.
i don't get to build much of a nest egg, though, stuff keeps breaking and needs repair and i'm also investing into my own game studio venture with a few talented friends. hedging a lot on that succeeding, but even if it doesn't i'm still here with a lot of assets and a hell of a lot of farming knowledge.
i hope you find a good and productive way to spend the money you'll end up with before inflation starts eating away at it.
I think you're similar to where I'd like to be once I've saved enough. Tiny cozy shelter on private land, peace and quiet. Even an empty plot with a large vehicle on it like a bus would be a mansion to me.
Even the game studio ambition is similar. Once I've made it to that point, I just want writing/art to be my full time job, working either a few hours a week or a few months per year to skate by.
But ending up in that position is probably going to cost me most of the nest egg. I am quite literally pulling myself up by my bootstraps here so it's somewhat slow going. 😂 Fortunately, it looks like my aggressive frugality is outrunning inflation at a decent rate.
Shit is still expensive though. I honestly have no idea how the fuck normies *live.* I've been rewearing the same work boots for years and years as the soles are coming apart and duct taped my torn hiking sandals back together multiple times because buying a new pair feels like too much of an expense.
