Its the river. I got this theory, see, that they're actually, biologically, a fungus. The river carries their spores and youth-pods under the floating carcasses and garbage until it hatches, spewing forth the new spore to go infect more of the Earth.
This is not their final form. Part two of my theory involves them coagulating and morphing into one giant ball of fingered-rice, shit and hair.
That might be green, for all we know.
