I was just discussing this with someone the other day. During the Victorian era, with the exception of winemakers, no successful brewer and distiller would brag about the source of their wealth. Instead, they would "buy" their social status by donating to social causes or other "upper crust" interests so they'd be known for their "philanthropy" rather than their actual trade. We see this when gangsters hand out free turkeys during Thanksgiving or toys at Christmas. However, much like with porn today, they actively worked to legitimize their trade and market their booze as socially acceptable or even having health benefits.
Today? Today every celebrity has their own brand of gin, vodka or tequila. You're not a "cool" entrepreneur unless you own some kind of distillery or a weed dispensary. Another sign and symptom of society collapse.
