You can get 8 -16 video surveillance camera setups with PoE power over ethernet and NVR. All in one system. Sometimes on sale from $250-$500 depending on resolution and size of hard drive.

Also for about $150 you can get alarms for all your windows and doors that communicate to a main hub.

can have all your surveillance cameras and alerts shoot to your email so that you get alerts any time a window is opened, door is opened, motion detected, recorded to nvr, available for remote viewing.

All for not much money if you don't mind running some ethernet wires through your attic and setting up the nerd stuff on the wifi router.
