In defense of some level of consumerism there have been some generational improvements in technology for most fields in that time period and I don't think it's too unreasonable to modernize after a new standard has developed and the prices have fallen.
I'm mostly just trying to raise the distinction between, minimalism(first image) a collection built up over a long period of time keeping up with modern advancements while keeping the old as spares(image not shown) and excessive consumerism(second picture).
There's this mindset that excess possession and excess consumption are the one in the same but that's often not the case and minimalism for the sake of minimalism is it's own form of waste often times.

Don't forget the bicycle gear and the camping gear and whatever else for this and for that. Can't just go ride a bike without it being special and shorts and shoes and a yellow fucking shirt. And a hundred thousand dollar jeep. Gear queers.
I happen to bicycle and for years I was riding this piece of shit $500 one speed road bike putting tens of thousands of miles a year while I had friends that spent $5k on a high tech carbon fiber bike only to leave it in storage along with all the fancy bicycling clothing (that looks really fucking gay).
I finally bought a high-end bike last December, it's so minimal I don't even have a fucking water bottle holder on it. Totally stripped down. And no gay faggot bicycling clothes.
Even though it was a big initial hurdle, shrinking all my belongings down into nothing more than what fits in my van was one of the best things I ever did. Frees up an insane amount of passive bandwidth.
Sometimes I feel like I have too much crap for snowboarding, but then I think of all the times I heard boomers bitch about how skiing is SO miserable while they'd go in jeans and sunglasses
