I have this little booklet on the subject, The Reformation 20 Answers by Catholic Answers. It was a good overview and gave direction on finding direct sources, letters, etc. So anyways I don't believe Luther was acting in good faith. According to Pope Leo X, Luther was invited to the Vatican several times to talk things through and work out common ground, but refused. He ended the letter saying that they hoped for repentance and peace-making but nevertheless they had to excommunicate him due to the heresies. I also find it suspicious that the sacraments and continuation of leadership for the church (ie the saints, prophesies, our shepherds the priests) were destroyed. Kill the shepherd, scatter the sheep. So these poor protestants have no communion or confession, they can't look to the saints for inspiration in their lives, and their churches are nowadays sad boxes with nothing beautiful or holy to gaze upon. They can't even pray for their dead. Those outcomes seem like they came from the devil himself. Woe to the divided church.
