I'm a mariner, Spanish merchant navy. Everyone I work with has tattoos (with the exception of myself), it's the stereotype. Not many women though, but I don't talk to any women anymore because I'm married so... But I was speaking of people in general. When I was younger I had family friends, women, who were 80s goths back in the day that had tattoos, they seemed pretty well adjusted, but back then subcultures were just for people who liked alternative music and the aesthetic, not a breeding ground for bipolar insane people.

I am talking about 20 something year old women, not back in the day. The landscape has changed a lot from yesteryear. This also applies to many men I have met, not everyone like it does for the women I have met.
Well, the main thing is that it's so common now that the tattoo itself is not necessarily indicative of who the person is. A majority of women are mentally ill, so are the majority of men. Just in different ways. It's less that they get tattoos because they're mentally ill and more that they simply get them because they've long since bled over into the mainstream. There is not much actual opposition to tattoos by anyone besides a couple of people anymore, and they see tattoos all the time, so they get them, because there's not any pushback or anyone telling them that it's wrong for xyz reason. In Japan, for instance, it's different. Where full sleeves mean that you may be affiliated with the yakuza, so there is a societal stigma around it. In the west there is no societal stigma around it, and it's considered a fairly innocuous thing by the overwhelming majority of people.
It started in the 80s and 90s when the alternative grunge and the metal scene started becoming mainstream. Those people had tattoos before everyone else did, but then everyone started seeing inked up people like James Hetfield, hair metal bands, nirvana, alice in chains, etc become extremely popular and it became cool to be like that. Nü metal had a vise grip on the cultural zeitgeist at the turn of the 21st century too, and all of those people were tatted, because metal musicians were always tatted anyways. Eventually, people forgot where this came from in the first place, so now everyone just has tattoos. Actually, that's the history on it that I got from my father one time when i asked him why everyone has tattoos nowadays, he was actively involved with the grunge scene in the early 90s, so I trust what he told me in any case.

It's almost entirely men that I meet. I don't meet women. If I have to, i don't assess their quality because i don't care. I'm married. As far as her own friend group, I'm not sure. Far from a typical spaniard, She is very socially reclusive and extremely introverted. Apart from going to the gym or getting groceries, she avoids everyone in the world as much as she can. She barely ever meets her friends or talks to them, and she doesn't have many friends period, although I know some of them have tattoos.
