Also, the belief that *The Handmaid's Tale* is somehow prophetic. When today's world less resembles the world that it paints than ever before.

These people seem wholly ignorant, for instance, of the fact that every time women were allowed into the Senate in Ancient Rome, it was reversed because of how disastrous they were in power. We have the Julias, powerful female relatives of the by-then deceased Septimius Severus, to thank for the abominable Elagabalus. Eventually, the Julias and some of their male relatives were assassinated and their bodies thrown in the Tiber: down which the corpses of common criminals often ended up floating. A fitting end.

Or that women weren't even allowed on stage in Ancient Greece.

It isn't just a European thing, either. Powerful women in Ancient China were similarly wicked, for instance, in having women that they thought better looking than themselves put to death.

Late-modern man doesn't have half the wisdom that his distant ancestors did. The past didn't greater resemble *The Handmaid's Tale* than today for no good reason.
