Europeans fought wars for territory and to sharpen their spears. New technologies would inevitably lead to war as people needed to test that technology to see if it was actually any good. Go back in time and look at ancient and medieval wars in Europe and you'll see surprisingly low casualty rates. Europeans weren't trying to slaughter each other.
