In 1993 I was paying $35/credit hour. A 51 credit hour year (16 fall/winter/spring and 3 for a single class in the summer) was about $2500 with tuition, books, and fees. You could probably spend $3000 if you bought some supplemental stuff. The school didn't offer housing, it was a technical college so that was on you. They did have a fairly nice, low-cost cafeteria that always had awesome holiday dinners.
That same credit hour load is now $10700 at that school. I have no visibility on books, so I can't advise there.
I had a $1000 loan from a school where I took a year of courses before starting in earnest, and paid for the rest with a summer job that, incidentally, paid almost $28 cost adjusted.
I'm sorry for anyone who is entering school now. God bless you.
I went to a JC in the mid 2000s and even at that time my cost per unit was less than what you just described. A semester tuition might be $300. One semester my books cost more. So weird that they jumped so much in such a short time.

That's absolutely insane.
